Former CMS Administrator Tom Scully has joined the Washington law office of Alston & Bird, the firm announced. Scully had been the agency's administrator since 2001, and Monday was his last day.
Messages left with Scully weren't returned, but in a news statement by Alston & Bird, he said, "I am excited to join a team with Sen. Bob Dole and Colin Roskey in bringing a strong legislative and public policy perspective to Alston & Bird's national healthcare practice." Roskey, the U.S. Senate Finance Committee's health policy adviser during the crafting of the recently passed Medicare legislation, joined the firm last week.
The recent disclosure that Scully was interviewing with several law and equity firms while he negotiated on the Medicare legislation has raised concern among some lawmakers who have asked HHS for clarification on the matter. HHS granted Scully an ethics waiver to contact potential employers. Scully has said the firms he spoke with never asked for advice on Medicare-related issues. -- by Tony Fong
