Effective Jan. 1, 2004, Crain Communications will bring its two healthcare publications, Modern Healthcare and Modern Physician, under one umbrella to serve the total healthcare industry.
?Properly aligning all the stakeholders in the healthcare delivery system is one of the major challenges facing healthcare executives today. Key to that proper alignment is the relationship between hospitals and physicians,? said Charles S. Lauer, vice president/publisher, Modern Healthcare and publishing director, Modern Physician.
Recognizing this challenge, Crain Communications is increasing the news provided to its physician readership and combining the editorial power of Modern Healthcare and Modern Physician to serve the industry leaders and all stakeholders in healthcare delivery.
Modern Healthcare will expand its editorial coverage of issues of interest to physicians, managers and executives. That expanded coverage will include a weekly news feature in Modern Healthcare about physicians as well as periodic special sections about physicians in editions of Modern Healthcare. These special editions will be distributed at key healthcare industry conferences where physician leaders gather. Some 20,000 of these special editions will be sent to the current subscribers of the print version of Modern Physician.
The monthly print version of Modern Physician will be replaced by several electronic products, effectively converting Modern Physician into a "virtual" magazine. Those products will include a daily e-newspaper, a monthly e-newsletter and an expanded Web site driven by news and information for physician entrepreneurs, managers and executives. Modern Physician's December 2003 print issue, distributed this week, will be the last print issue of the publication.
?With this change, we will now be the single source of healthcare news for healthcare leaders, physicians and executives,? said Mr. Lauer.
Clark Bell, publisher of Modern Physician, and his staff have been asked to stay on through the end of the year to transition the business and its mission to Modern Healthcare. Former Modern Physician Editor Joseph Conn will be joining the Modern Healthcare editorial staff as Online Editor/Modern Physician to run the day-to-day operations of the new e-newspaper Modern Physician (modernphysician.com) and all its products. Former Modern Physician Copy Editor/Webmaster Katherine Downing also will be joining the Modern Healthcare editorial staff in the same capacity to provide editing and technical support to the new venture. Both moves are effective Jan. 1, 2004. Both Conn and Downing will report to David Burda, editor of Modern Healthcare, who will oversee the editorial operations of both titles.
