Children's Hospital and the University of Alabama Hospital, both in Birmingham, received state approval to build a $101 million, 71-bed hospital in Birmingham to replace women's and infant's inpatient services currently housed at the two hospitals. Currently, the services for the two patient groups are spread throughout both institutions over an 11-block area. UAB Health System CEO Dave Fine said the two systems' current facilities weren't able to be renovated to meet the demands of an increasing number of patients. Crews will break ground on the seven-story, 360,000-square-foot hospital in February, with completion expected in June 2006. Children's Hospital and UAB Health System entered into a joint operating agreement in 2001 after more than 35 years of collaboration between the two providers. -- by Julie Piotrowski
