Dennis Fowler, M.D., has been appointed chief medical officer of Framingham, Mass.-based Averion, which provides clinical trials support for biotech, pharmaceutical and medical device companies. Fowler will oversee medical writing, clinical monitoring and safety and surveillance functions and provide strategic direction for all clinical programs.

William Mattern, M.D., has been elected chairman of the board of directors of the North Carolina Healthcare Information and Communications Alliance. Mattern is professor of medicine at the University of North Carolina Health Care System, Chapel Hill.
Jay Kaplan, M.D., director of service excellence with California Emergency Physicians Medical Group, has received the Outstanding Speaker of the Year Award from the American College of Emergency Physicians' Scientific Assembly.
Samuel LeBaron, M.D., associate professor of family medicine and director for the Center of Education in Family and Community Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine, has received the Association of American Medical Colleges' Humanism in Medicine Award.
Kenneth Ludmerer, M.D., has received the 2003 Abraham Flexner Award for Distinguished Service to Medical Education from the AAMC. He is professor of medicine in the School of Medicine at Washington University, St. Louis.
Frank Speizer, M.D., and Walter Willett, M.D., professors of medicine at Harvard Medical School and faculty members at the Harvard School of Public Health, have received the David E. Rogers Award from the AAMC for collaborative work in the public health field.

Glaser Alpha Omega Alpha Distinguished Teacher Awards to: Joel Felner, M.D., Emory University School of Medicine; Barry Mann, M.D., Drexel University College of Medicine; Gabriel Virella, M.D., Medical University of South Carolina; and Lawrence Wood, M.D., dean of medical education, Pritzker School of Medicine, University of Chicago.
