WellPoint Health Networks, Thousand Oaks, Calif., which recently announced plans to create the nation's largest health insurer by merging with Indianapolis-based rival Anthem, this week completed a much smaller, lower-profile acquisition by purchasing privately held outcomes research and data-mining company Health Core.
WellPoint closed on the transaction Monday. It did not disclose terms of the deal.
With the sale, Health Core, which offers its services to health plans and pharmaceutical companies, has been folded into WellPoint Horizons, a WellPoint division focusing on noninsurance ventures.
"We can now leverage data in innovative, new ways through the techniques and capabilities that Health Core has developed," WellPoint executive Charles Kennedy, M.D., says in a company statement.
