The California Medical Association and a coalition of healthcare providers has sued the state to block $237 million in cuts to Medi-Cal, the state's Medicaid program, scheduled to take effect Jan. 1, 2004. The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Sacramento, contends that the 5% funding cut, approved this fall, violates the federal Social Security Act by ignoring how the reductions would affect access to care for the more than 6 million low-income residents who depend on Medi-Cal. -- by Laura B.
