Oklahoma University Medical Center, Oklahoma City, will downgrade its Level I trauma center, the only such unit in the state, to a Level III emergency department Dec. 31, after losing $9 million on trauma care over the past three years. State officials said losing the Level I center could result in delays in care. A spokesman for the 651-bed hospital blamed low reimbursement and a large number of patients diverted from nearby hospitals. "We take more than our fair share," spokesman Dennis Gimmel said. In 2002, the trauma center treated 1,775 patients. -- by Patrick Reilly
