Nine out of 10 Americans believe cosmetic surgery has become more socially acceptable in the past five years, and three in five have a favorable view of it, according to a survey released today by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, based in Arlington Heights, Ill.
Those polled indicate that three technical advances make cosmetic surgery more appealing, with 39% citing minimized scarring, 37% a reduction in pain and 35% shortened recovery time.
The survey, conducted by Harris Interactive, also finds that:
- 62% say cosmetic procedures are now acceptable for both men and women;
- liposuction is the most desired procedure among men, with 13% agreeing;
- tummy tucks are the most desired surgery among women, with 31% agreeing; and
- Westerners and Southerners are most likely to have had cosmetic surgery.
