In a "virtually unanimous" vote, members of the American Association of Health Plans (AAHP) and the Health Insurance Association of America (HIAA) approved a merger of the two trade groups, officials said. After years of protracted negotiations, the boards of the AAHP and HIAA agreed last month to merge in an effort to boost lobbying clout and reduce administrative costs. The merger is expected to be completed as early as this week. Together the groups represent about 1,400 health plans covering more than 200 million Americans. AAHP President Karen Ignagni will head the combined association, to be known as AAHP/HIAA until a new name is approved. -- by Laura B. Benko
