The Foundation for eHealth Initiative, Washington, announced a $3.9 million grant program to provide seed money for community efforts that use IT to improve healthcare and said it will explain the program to interested parties in an Oct. 27 conference call. Applications will be accepted until Nov. 19. In a written statement, the coalition said "demonstration projects funded by the program will show how electronic communications using common health data standards can help patients receive necessary and timely medical treatment and guard against medical errors, incorrect prescriptions and adverse drug events," as well as help officials identify and respond to public health threats more quickly. Groups that elect not to seek funding can register for program updates and technical assistance. The initiative is funded by a grant from HHS' Health Resources and Services Administration.
