Caremark Rx says the Federal Trade Commission is delaying a decision and asking for more information about the company's bid to buy AdvancePCS.
The announcement Friday by Birmingham, Ala.-based Caremark Rx did not contain any significant details. Before the delay, the FTC had until Friday to make a ruling.
Under the merger, Caremark Rx would become the No. 2 pharmacy-benefit manager behind only Medco Health Solutions, as the number of large, publicly traded pharmacy benefit managers would be reduced from four to three.
The announcement follows news last week that officials in Florida and other states are examining antitrust aspects of the proposed merger.
The two companies, plus Medco and the No. 3 PBM, Express Scripts, also face a class action lawsuit accusing them of price-fixing and collusion with pharmaceutical suppliers.
