Magellan Health Services, the financially troubled behavioral managed care organization, has named its chief operating officer, Rene Lerer, M.D., as its new president.
Lerer will continue as COO, a position he has held since he joined Magellan in January, the Columbia, Md.-based company says in a release.
The company says Lerer succeeds Jay Levin, who had agreed to serve in a transitional role.
In March, the ailing company received federal Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
Magellan says Lerer has more than 20 years of experience in healthcare, with past positions as COO at Prudential Healthcare and Travelers Health Network and senior vice president of operations for pharmacy and disease management with Value Health, another managed behavioral health care organization.
At last count, Magellan provided behavioral health benefits to 68 million enrollees through contracts with health plans, government agencies, labor unions and self-insured corporations.
