George Washington University Hospital, Washington, has resumed normal operations after a break in a gas main forced the evacuation of about 100 patients and the temporary closure of its emergency room earlier in the day. The break occurred outside the hospital. Most patients were moved to other campus buildings, but about four ER patients were transferred to other hospitals, a spokeswoman said. In addition, two surgeries were canceled. -- by Tony Fong
