Voters in eastern St. Tammany Parish, La., approved a property tax increase to support a $22.5 million bond issue for Slidell Memorial Hospital, after rejecting two earlier capital proposals. The measure passed 16,446 to 10,453, or 61.1% in favor, according to unofficial results. Voters rejected a sale of the hospital to investor-owned Tenet Healthcare Corp. in April and turned down a larger tax levy proposal last year. A new nine-member hospital board is expected to be appointed within weeks. A nominating committee has narrowed the list of candidates to 14 from 50 applicants, after passage of state legislation requiring the hospital to overhaul its governance. -- by Mary Chris Jaklevic
