Calling healthcare a fundamental human right, the American Medical Student Association (AMSA) urged Congress to create a single-payer system that would provide healthcare coverage to all Americans. In support of its position, AMSA pointed to new Census Bureau data showing that 15.2% of Americans were uninsured in 2002, up from 14.6% in 2001.
