HealthSouth Corp., Birmingham, Ala., has selected MedAssets HSCA, St. Louis, to manage its supply procurement process and help control supply costs. The 5 1/2-year contract is effective Dec. 1. HealthSouth previously handled supply purchasing internally. The company's interim management, which took over following allegations of accounting fraud at the company, decided participating in a GPO would lead to cost savings, HealthSouth spokesman Andy Brimmer said. He declined to disclose the expected savings. The company has been dogged by allegations that businesses owned by founder Richard Scrushy and his associates profited in their relationships with HealthSouth at the company's expense. Brimmer said such allegations were not a motivation for the purchasing agreement. -- by Vince Galloro
