Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Mark McClellan and two congressmen separately expressed concerns about an HHS proposal to change requirements of the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps. In a letter to HHS Secretary Tommy Thompson, McClellan said a plan to require corps members to be ready for deployment "immediately and without exception may well end up reducing participation." In a separate letter to Thompson, Reps. Chris Van Hollen Jr. (D-Md.) and Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) asked to see all comments on the proposal from HHS employees, corps members and other interested parties. -- by Tony Fong
