Garrard County Memorial Hospital, Lancaster, Ky., will suspend operations by Aug. 29, but an adjoining nursing home will continue to operate under new management. Care Centers Management Group, Johnson City, Tenn., agreed to purchase the 15-bed hospital and 100-bed nursing home for about $1.45 million, officials said. Earlier this week, the hospital board voted to "temporarily suspend" operations at Garrard, which lost more than $370,000 in the first six months of 2003. The decision to temporarily shut down the hospital was made after a study determined it would need monthly subsidies of $50,000 to $100,000 to continue operating. Board Chairman Leonard Smith said he and other officials are working to keep the facility open as an urgent-care facility or for diagnostic services. "That's all totally up in the air, but we are determined to save some level of medical care for Garrard County," Smith said. The hospital and nursing home have combined debt of about $2.1 million. The nursing home will be renamed Christian Care Center of Lancaster. -- by Michael Romano
