Fred Brown, former president and CEO of BJC HealthCare, St. Louis, and 1999 chairman of the American Hospital Association, was named to the top post at Northern Arizona Healthcare, Flagstaff. Brown, 62, starts Aug. 25 as president and CEO of the system, which includes 242-bed Flagstaff Medical Center, 99-bed Verde Valley Medical Center, Cottonwood, an emergency-care and cancer center in Sedona, Ariz., and a home health agency. After leading BJC for five years, Brown resigned from the 13-hospital system in 1998, saying he wanted to devote more attention to the AHA post and his family. "The opportunity to be a part of this growing, high-quality healthcare system is exciting," Brown said in a written statement. He succeeds Joseph Kortum, who left to become president and CEO of Southwestern Washington Medical Center, Vancouver, Wash. -- by Patrick Reilly
