Michael Waters will retire as president and CEO at Hendrick Health System, Abilene, Texas, on Nov. 1, 2004, two days after his 62nd birthday. "My plans have always been to retire at age 62," Waters said in a news release. Waters, who has led the 525-bed hospital since 1980, said he wanted to give the board adequate time to find a replacement and complete several major projects. Hendrick Chairman Ron Fogle said the board likely will hire a national search firm, and the search is expected to take up to nine months. Waters has served as chairman of the Texas Hospital Association and the American College of Healthcare Executives and was a member of the American Hospital Association board of trustees. He currently is chairman of the AHA Political Action Committee. After retiring, Waters will become a consultant to the hospital's board and the new CEO, the news release said. -- by Mary Chris Jaklevic
