Legislation extending the availability of funds for the State Children's Health Insurance Program is awaiting President Bush's signature after passing the Senate last week and the House earlier this summer. If signed, the legislation would make $1.2 billion in unspent SCHIP funds for 1998 and 1999 available to states through 2004. Access to $1.5 billion allotted for 2000 and 2001 would be extended through 2004 and 2005, respectively. In addition, the legislation would allow 10 states to use 20% of their unspent SCHIP funds to provide Medicaid coverage to children. The states are Connecticut, Maryland, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Vermont, Washington and Wisconsin. -- by Tony Fong
