Veterans Affairs Secretary Anthony Principi proposed a new pay formula that would incorporate productivity and other performance measures for doctors, dentists and nurse executives in the VA healthcare system. The formula would combine base pay with market-determined pay -- reflecting geography, specialty and experience -- and performance incentives. For example, under the new system, a radiologist with 10 years experience earning about $190,000 annually could receive an additional $32,000 to $82,000. The changes are necessary to make the VA competitive in recruiting, Principi said in a written statement. -- by Tony Fong
