Health Management Associates, Naples, Fla., an exception in an apparent trend toward flat patient volume, said its profits were buoyed by a 3.9% increase in adjusted admissions and a 5.4% increase in net revenue per admission. The rural-hospital operator reported a 14% increase in profits to $75.9 million, or 30 cents per share, in its third quarter ended June 30, up from $66.6 million, or 26 cents per share, in the year-ago period.
