Goddard Healthcare ConsultingThe Coppell, Texas-based physician-recruitment and consulting company in February reported starting salaries for 9,000 physicians in 25 specialties employed by 4,000 healthcare providers including hospitals (70% of the sample), group practices (25%), managed-care plans (2%) and other healthcare organizations (3%). The survey includes in-practice physicians as well as 2003-2004 residents who had received formal offers but had not yet begun their practices. The survey is free. Hay GroupThe Philadelphia-based consulting firm surveyed 53 organizations in May 2002, reporting compensation for more than 9,000 physicians in 100 specialties. Also included in this year's survey are salaries for 35 pediatric specialties and 38 allied health positions. Organizations surveyed were hospitals (36%), hospital systems (28%), group practices (23%), HMOs (7%) and other organizations (6%). Hospital and Healthcare Compensation ServiceThe Oakland, N.J.-based consulting firm's survey of employed physicians is published each March. This year's 27th annual survey, conducted in January, includes 268 organizations and 19,932 physicians in 43 specialties. MD NetworkThe Irving, Texas-based healthcare staffing firm's annual Physician Compensation, Incentives and Benefits Survey reports the salaries, guarantees, incentives and benefits offered to physicians on a national basis. The report was compiled during 2002 and represents 31 specialties. Data were collected from more than 5,600 physicians and 1,600 senior-level administrative personnel representing hospitals (64%) and group practices (36%). The survey is free. Medical Group Management AssociationThe Englewood, Colo.-based trade group represents 220,000 physicians nationwide and conducts an annual compensation survey of member and nonmember practices. This year's final report, in its 17th consecutive year, will be released in August. Results will be based on salary data for fiscal 2002 from 40,089 physicians in more than 105 specialties. Of the 1,830 organizations surveyed, 433 were hospital-owned practices. The cost of the compensation report is $265 for members and $475 for nonmembers. Merritt, Hawkins and AssociatesThe Irving, Texas-based healthcare staffing firm reported compensation based on 2,405 permanent physician recruitment assignments in 46 states from April 2002 through March 2003. Data were collected from hospitals (70%), group practices (27%) and other organizations (3%) that were recruiting physicians into a variety of practice settings, including group practices (39%), partnerships (22%), solo practices (18%), hospital practices (13%) and other settings (8%). Compensation figures by specialty include the base financial offer (salary or income guarantee) made to recruit physicians into these practice settings, and do not include signing bonuses or any other bonus or benefit. Sullivan, Cotter and AssociatesThe Detroit-based human resources consultancy's preliminary 2003 survey reports physician compensation levels paid by more than 165 organizations with 18,500 physicians, Ph.D.s and midlevel providers. The survey, conducted from April to June, includes data from hospitals, group practices, managed-care plans and other organizations, including integrated delivery systems, practice plans and medical foundations. The survey includes data on staff physicians, education/residency coordinators, division chiefs and department chairs, as well as administrative physicians, medical group executives and residents. Warren SurveysThe Rockford, Ill.-based company is the only independently owned and operated survey firm collecting salary and benefit information on employed physicians and capitation rates by specialty. Its survey is conducted annually. The 2002 survey is currently available and is based on data collected as of Sept. 1, 2002. This survey includes 196 participating organizations representing 6,748 physicians in 31 specialties. The results are segmented by six regions, as well as six organizational categories-ambulatory-care centers, community health centers, group practices, hospitals, HMOs and university-based groups. Human resources personnel within these organizations report all salary data. No data are self-reported. The report is available in three different formats: a PDF, an Excel file or a hard copy.
