Healthcare information technology vendor Allscripts Healthcare Solutions, Libertyville, Ill., this week reached separate agreements to acquire clinical records scanning software company Advanced Imaging Concepts and pharmaceutical detailing firm RxCentric.
Allscripts will pay $18 million in cash for Louisville, Ky.-based AIC, maker of Impact.MD, a system that digitizes documents so existing paper records can be incorporated into electronic medical records. It is designed as a low-cost, low-hassle way for medical practices to automate clinical information without altering existing physician habits and workflow.
AIC has had a partnership with Allscripts for a year. Allscripts has offered Impact.MD technology as a document scanning component to its TouchWorks EMR customers.
The acquisition of New York City-based RxCentric, will cost Allscripts at least $4.5 million cash and assumed liabilities. Allscripts says that the private shareholders of RxCentric can earn up to $1.8 million more if the detailing firm meets unspecified performance targets in the first year following the deal's closing.
RxCentric, a competitor to the Physicians Interactive unit of Allscripts, has a database of about 50,000 physicians for pharmaceutical companies to target with detailing efforts, according to Allscripts.
