The House Energy and Commerce Committee has sent letters to 20 hospital systems asking for information about billing for uninsured patients dating to Jan. 1, 1998, as part of an investigation into the matter. According to the letter, the committee is concerned about providers giving insurance companies deep discounts on list prices while seeking payment of the full list price from uninsured patients. The committee requested financial data, information about how prices are determined and policies regarding collection of patient debt. The systems include Mayo Health System, Rochester, Minn.; Sutter Health, Sacramento, Calif.; and Tenet Healthcare Corp., Santa Barbara, Calif. -- by Tony Fong
