The House last week passed an appropriations bill including $356.7 billion for HHS for fiscal 2004, a 12.9% increase over the agency's fiscal 2003 budget of $316 billion. The Senate is expected to vote on an appropriations bill this week. The Bush administration had requested $353 billion for HHS. The House bill includes $112.7 million for nursing programs, $57.4 million for rural hospital outreach grants, $39.7 million for rural hospital flexible grants and $8 million for rural health research. -- by Tony Fong
