Three not-for-profit health systems in the Dallas-Fort Worth area have sold their 17-year-old contracting network to HealthSmart Preferred Care, a PPO based in Lubbock, Texas, for undisclosed terms. North Texas Healthcare Network, Irving, serves about 105,000 people in 37 counties through a network of 70 hospitals and 7,800 physicians. Founded in 1986, it was owned by Baylor Health Care System, Methodist Health System and Texas Health Resources. Its former chairman, Dave Ashworth, said the network was profitable but needed to align with provider networks in other markets to stay competitive. -- by Mary Chris Jaklevic
