Pediatrix Medical Group, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., said federal prosecutors have launched a civil investigation into the company's Medicaid billing practices and intend to request documents and other information within the next two weeks. The company said it intends to cooperate. Pediatrix, the nation's largest provider of neonatal physician services, has resolved similar billing inquiries with attorneys general in six states since 2000, the company said. None of the inquiries involved an admission of wrongdoing or had a material financial impact, Pediatrix said; however, the company said it is unable to predict the potential impact of the latest investigation or how long a resolution will take. -- by Michael Romano
