The Florida Legislature ended its special session on malpractice reform Tuesday without passing a $250,000 cap on noneconomic damages. But Gov. Jeb Bush will call lawmakers back July 9, the Florida Hospital Association reports.
The session was supposed to end Friday, but Senate President Jim King sent members home Tuesday, noting that negotiations for a cap with the Florida House were not progressing, the Miami Herald reports.
While the House passed a $250,000 cap, the Senate passed a $500,000 cap that calls for much higher awards in certain cases. That level is unacceptable to the FHA, the Florida Medical Association and the governor.
