The AMA has installed its first doctor-lawyer president, Donald Palmisano, M.D., who says he will make malpractice reform his No. 1 priority, the AMA says.
Palmisano, a general and vascular surgeon in New Orleans, was inaugurated Wednesday night during the organization's annual meeting in Chicago, which ends today.
"Help us restore common sense to the medical liability system," Palmisano said in his inauguration speech. "Thwart the bullies who prize personal gain over the common good."
The AMA says Palmisano played a key role in passage of a 1975 law in Louisiana that caps noneconomic damages in malpractice lawsuits.
