Registered nurses at 22 California hospitals operated by Tenet Healthcare Corp., Santa Barbara, Calif., have formed a council, or bargaining unit, under the California Nurses Association, the union said. In addition, registered nurses at 17 of Tenet's California hospitals have petitioned the National Labor Relations Board to conduct unionizing elections, the CNA said. The CNA has asked the NLRB to investigate a three-year labor agreement that Tenet reached in May with two competing unions -- the Service Employees International Union and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees. The agreement would expedite organizing and contract negotiations by the unions at Tenet's California hospitals and at two Florida hospitals. -- by Vince Galloro
