About 20 hospitals, private corporations and government agencies have joined a demonstration project under which they will exchange standardized clinical data in hopes of improving patient care. The effort, called the Healthcare Collaborative Network, was announced today in Washington. In the project's initial phase, three hospital systems--New York Presbyterian Hospital, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, and Wishard Memorial Hospital, Indianapolis--will exchange clinical data, such as laboratory results and diagnostic summaries, among themselves and with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the CMS and the Food and Drug Administration. Other healthcare systems and information technology companies are expected to join the project over the summer. -- by Tony Fong
