The Medicare payment rate for long-term acute-care hospitals will rise 2.5% July 1 -- slightly higher than the 2.2% update proposed by the CMS in March and the first payment increase for such facilities since Oct. 1, 2002. Medicare is expected to pay long-term acute-care facilities $2.17 billion in 2004. The update also marks the permanent move to a July 1 update cycle, different from the Oct. 1 cycle for acute-care hospitals. The CMS said the change should allow it to use resources more efficiently.
