Tenet Healthcare Corp., Santa Barbara, Calif., said today that the Internal Revenue Service is seeking $157 million in back taxes related to Tenet's 1995, 1996 and 1997 fiscal years. Tenet said in a securities filing that it will appeal the IRS' findings, which it received in a "revenue agent's report" May 29. Tenet said it estimates the interest on the IRS claim would be $112 million, a figure that would continue to grow during an appeal. One disputed item involves a partial deduction taken by Tenet's predecessor company, National Medical Enterprises, on the then-record $379 million fraud settlement the company reached with the federal government in June 1994. Tenet owns and operates 114 hospitals. -- by Vince Galloro
