HHS Secretary Tommy Thompson is expected to announce the appointment of Dara Corrigan as interim HHS inspector general, replacing Janet Rehnquist, whose resignation becomes effective June 1, sources said. Corrigan is a career civil servant who is considered an authority on healthcare fraud and who since February has been CMS' director of program integrity. Previously, she was deputy chief counsel of program integrity. She began her career at the U.S. Justice Department in the civil fraud section and spent four years as an assistant U.S. attorney in Washington, where she led the healthcare fraud task force. The Bush administration is expected to name a permanent replacement for Rehnquist by year-end. -- by Mark Taylor
