Anthem, Indianapolis, named President and CEO Larry Glasscock to the additional post of chairman, replacing L. Ben Lytle, who retired after five years in the position. Lytle was elected chairman emeritus. Anthem said Glasscock's promotion concludes a "carefully planned, five-year transition strategy." Glasscock, 55, joined Anthem in April 1998 as COO and was elected president one year later. In October 1999, he succeeded Lytle as CEO. The move comes at a time when many healthcare companies are re-evaluating the practice of allowing the same person to serve as both chairman and CEO. Tenet Healthcare Corp. announced last month that its chairman and CEO, Jeffrey Barbakow, would relinquish his chairman title later this year. -- by Laura B. Benko
