Your April 7 special report "How much do they make?" (p. 28) was somewhat misleading. Specifically, your article ignores the fact that the 2001 compensation totals for former American Medical Association Executive Vice President E. Ratcliffe Anderson Jr. includes payment of deferred compensation that was earned in prior years, but simply paid out in 2001.
In fact, 64% of the compensation and benefits total listed for Anderson in 2001 was actually compensation deferred in prior years. Reporting the actual compensation and benefits Anderson earned during 2001 would place him much lower on your list. This important fact should have been cited, particularly because the AMA has clarified Anderson's compensation figures with your magazine in a previous letter published Jan. 6. The AMA makes no apologies for the compensation it provides its top executive, but your article greatly distorts the facts.

Regarding your article, "A '100 Top Hospitals' addendum" (April 14, p. 31), the hospital in Pikeville, Tenn., is listed as "Erlanger Bledsoe Hospital" rather than Bledsoe Community Medical Center or Bledsoe Community Hospital, its name in 2000, which was the period studied by Solucient as the basis for its listing. Bledsoe Community Hospital, a subsidiary of Associates Capital Group, operated the facility through the end of its lease in 2001. Erlanger has operated the facility since then.
In an era where governmental agencies are publishing "report cards," a positive, affirming article such as Solucient's top 100 list is eagerly awaited and selection is highly regarded. For changes of ownership or control, Solucient states that its policy is to list the current name of the hospital rather than its name during the period studied. The listing and the basis for selection are disconnected under this policy. A footnote or some other form of disclosure of an event as significant as change of ownership or control would be appropriate.
