More than 50 physicians at 228-bed Shelby Baptist Medical Center, Alabaster, Ala., have signed a petition calling for the removal of Dennis Hall, president and CEO of 10-hospital Baptist Health System, Shelby's parent. Doctors at other Baptist Health hospitals reportedly are pondering a similar petition drive, stemming from concerns about what critics contend are financial missteps by Hall, including a failed partnership with an HMO, Health Partners of Alabama. In a written statement today, Hall said he was "surprised and disappointed" by the petition and added that he hoped to resolve the physicians' concerns. He said newspaper accounts that referred to mismanagement by his administration were based on incorrect information. Baptist is considering several options for its future, including a merger, sale or reorganization. -- by Michael Romano
