Michael Chertoff, assistant U.S. attorney general in charge of the Justice Department's criminal division and former HCA outside counsel, has been nominated for a judgeship on the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, Philadelphia. Chertoff, 49, has led the Justice Department's antiterrorism preparations and investigations following Sept. 11, 2001. A graduate of Harvard University and Harvard Law School and former U.S. attorney in New Jersey, Chertoff joined the Justice Department in 2001. He is best known to healthcare insiders for his role in private industry, at Latham & Watkins, where he served as counsel to HCA in negotiating its civil and criminal settlements.
