As part of its lobbying effort for malpractice reforms in Congress, the AMA today said it is sending doctors posters for their waiting rooms and brochures to hand out to patients.
Patients will be given a toll-free number and Web site URL to sign up for e-mail issue updates and directly contact their legislators to urge them to support HR 4600, the AMA says in a release.
The bill, which would put a $250,000 cap on noneconomic damages, has uncertain chances in the Senate.
"Our hope is that as patients contact their senators in support of medical liability reform, lawmakers will be invigorated to take action on this issue soon after they return to Washington," said AMA President Yank Coble, Jr. M.D., in the AMA release.
The patient hotline number is (888) 434-6200. The AMA also has a physician hotline number at (800) 833-6354.
