Barry Freedman, ousted as chief of Mount Sinai Hospital in New York last fall, will take over as president and CEO of Albert Einstein Healthcare Network, Philadelphia, on May 12. Freedman, 54, will succeed Susan Bernini, who has been interim CEO since Martin Goldsmith retired earlier this year. Bernini will remain at Einstein in her former capacity as COO. Freedman had been with Mount Sinai for 25 years and played a key role in its problematic merger with NYU Hospital Center in 1998. In 2000 he was appointed interim chief of Mount Sinai NYU Health System, temporarily succeeding the merger's chief architect, John Rowe, who moved on to head Aetna, the nation's largest health insurer. -- by Cinda Becker
