Missouri Attorney General Jay Nixon has appealed a judge's approval of plans by Saint Luke's Health System, Kansas City, Mo., to build a 52-bed, $86.5 million hospital in Lee's Summit, Mo. The Missouri Health Facilities Review Committee in June 2002 denied Saint Luke's request for certificate-of-need approval, but last month Cole County (Mo.) Circuit Court overturned the committee's decision. Nixon, on behalf of the committee, appealed the decision to state appeals court in Kansas City. "We remain convinced there's not a need for a new hospital in the area," committee Director Tom Piper said. -- by Julie Piotrowski
