George Vecchione, president and CEO of Lifespan, Providence, R.I., and Pete Velez, executive director of Elmhurst (N.Y.) Hospital Center and senior vice president of Queens Healthcare Network, are the winners of the 2003 CEO IT Achievement Award sponsored by Modern Healthcare and Chicago-based Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society.
The award, which was created this year, recognizes one or more healthcare industry CEOs who demonstrate leadership and commitment to using information technology to advance their healthcare organization's strategic goals.
Chosen from a field of 50 applicants, Vecchione and Velez were selected because they best achieved measurable results through leadership and commitment to IT in their organizations and shared their organizations' experiences in IT with their peers and other members of the healthcare industry.
Modern Healthcare and HIMSS announced the new recognition program on Feb. 10 at the HIMSS 2003 Annual Conference & Exhibition in San Diego. The nomination deadline was March 17. A six-member panel of judges subsequently made the selections after a four-week review process.
The panel of three healthcare CEOs and three healthcare chief information officers included: Asif Ahmad, vice president and CIO at Duke University Health System, Durham, N.C.; Dennis Barry, president and CEO of Moses Cone Health System, Greensboro, N.C.; Jack Bovender Jr., chairman and CEO of HCA, Nashville; Richard Duncan, vice president and CIO of Children's Medical Center of Dallas; C. Martin Harris, CIO of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation; and R. Timothy Stack, president and CEO of Piedmont Medical Center, Atlanta.
Modern Healthcare and HIMSS will honor Vecchione and Velez at an awards dinner on June 9 held in conjunction with the HIMSS 2003 Summer Conference in Chicago. The executives and their organizations also will be profiled in a special supplement to the June 9 issue of Modern Healthcare.
