West Virginia University Hospitals, Morgantown, will receive certificate-of-need approval tomorrow for an 81-bed, $75 million expansion at 380-bed Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, said Sonia Chambers, chairwoman of the West Virginia Health Care Authority. Chambers said the system demonstrated its need for more space, particularly, she added, since some West Virginia residents have been forced to seek high-level care out of state because the university hospital was full. The project was proposed in July 2002.
In other construction news, the University of Alabama approved construction of a $110 million women's and children's hospital in Birmingham, Ala., to consolidate services now located across 11 buildings. The facility still needs state approval. Completion is targeted for 2006. -- by Vince Galloro and Patrick Reilly
