Cleveland Clinic Health System officials agreed to maintain Level II trauma services at 167-bed Huron Hospital, East Cleveland, Ohio, following all-day meetings yesterday with city politicians. Officials had intended to downgrade the trauma center to Level III after its neurosurgeons ended their contract effective May 31 citing high malpractice premiums. Details must be worked out, but the Cleveland Clinic will staff the trauma center with on-call neurosurgeons 24 hours a day to maintain the Level II designation, a spokeswoman said. East Cleveland Mayor Emmanuel Onunwor said the trauma center is the only one serving the largely African-American community and the scheduled closing had been perceived as a racist decision. "We as a community would not allow the trauma center to close, and we implored them to do what they could," Onunwor said. -- by Susanna Moon
