The Department of Veterans Affairs is conducting a nationwide review of medical research at its 115 hospitals and has halted some research after discovering serious rule violations, some of which may have contributed to patient deaths. Allegations include falsification of data and failure to tell patients of risks involved in the experimental treatments. The VA said it is looking into patient deaths at hospitals in Albany, N.Y., Detroit and Fargo, N.D., and is investigating "serious noncompliance" at hospitals in Long Beach, Calif., Martinez, Calif., Pittsburgh and Providence, R.I. -- by Tony Fong
