Louisiana State University's nine-hospital system must spend a total of $406,000 to compensate 496 workers for back overtime under a settlement with the U.S. Labor Department. LSU Health Sciences Center agreed to make $119,000 in cash payments and grant $287,000 in paid time off for overtime performed between January 2000 and June 2002. LSU also was fined $8,250 for breaking the law a second time. LSU paid $29,093 in back overtime to 22 workers after a similar investigation covering 1996 to 1998. LSU officials said they thought that cafeteria, maintenance, security and office workers were exempt from a federal law requiring time-and-a-half pay for work in excess of 40 hours a week. -- by Patrick Reilly
