The National Resident Matching Program says this year's match, which occurs today, placed a record number of applicants in residency training programs.
More than 22,000 of almost 24,000 applicants were placed in programs, where they will begin working this July, the NRMP says in a release. It adds that 500 more applicants were placed than last year.
Although 17 fewer residency programs participated in this year's match, the number of offered positions increased by 450, including an increase of more than 300 available PGY-1 positions, the NRMP says.
The NRMP says fill rates, the percentage available positions filled by the Match, varied greatly by specialty:
- 76.3% for family medicine;
- 90.1% for pathology;
- 93.8% for pediatrics;
- 95.1% for internal medicine;
- 96.3% for first year anesthesiology and 95.6% for second year;
- 97.8% for first diagnostic radiology and 99.85 for second year; and
- 99% for surgery.
