A physicians group affiliated with the University of Arizona will take over management of county-owned Kino Community Hospital, Tucson, which had faced conversion to a psychiatric facility. University Physicians will continue to operate the 114-bed hospital as an acute-care facility, restore its maternity ward and eventually add a women's center. The 50-year lease begins July 1. The hospital has drained $70 million from Pima County's general fund in the past decade, and county supervisors had considered ending several of its inpatient and emergency services, turning the facility into a primarily psychiatric hospital. -- by Laura B.
